Don’t Forget Me Mommy


We moved into our current neighborhood about four years ago. It is a wonderful, quiet neighborhood with wide streets, tall shade trees, and well-manicured lawns. In the summer you can hear the sprinklers rat-tat-tatting, children playing and birds chirping away in the trees. It's the kind of neighborhood where neighbors all look out for each others' kids and on many evenings you can see people walking around paying visits to each other or just walking over to one of the local back yards to share ice-cream and coffee among friends.

One of our neighbors told us a pretty horrific story which took place in this tranquil setting. There was a twenty-something couple with a little daughter. One summer evening the parents got into a pretty bad argument. The wife stormed off and headed for a neighbor's house. Normally, she would have taken the daughter but since it was a heated situation she ended up just storming off in a huff. The kid was in her room playing and the husband didn't actually see the wife storm off. He had assumed the wife took the kid with her. The husband ended up grabbing a six-pack and he went to a different neighbor's house. They each thought the other parent had the little girl.

Tragically, the daughter, left home alone, somehow managed to set the house on fire. The parents, each at a different house on the street, heard the commotion (fire trucks, etc) and each ran out from where they were in the neighborhood. They ended up meeting on the street in front of the house, which is where they realized that their daughter was still in the house. The house was completely engulfed in flames – there was no hope for the child. They actually found her hiding in an upstairs closet with her face pushed into a pillow, perhaps in a vain attempt to block the smoke.

As a daddy myself, I cannot even imagine what that must have been like for the parents.

This pic is a straightforward photo manipulation with no textures. I "painted" the face in Photoshop. The blood and fading legs simply represent death and abandonment...
